Seeking Personal Guidance through the Spirit

Many believers seek God's guidance for decisions big and small. The scriptures teach that God speaks to our minds and hearts by the Holy Ghost, often quietly. Learning to recognize that voice takes practice and patience.

Jump to the steps

Before you begin

  • Guidance from God is consistent with His goodness. Impressions from the Spirit lead toward love, peace, and kindness. They never ask you to harm yourself or anyone else. If thoughts like that come, pause and talk with someone you trust right away.
  • It's wise to talk big decisions over with people you trust as well as with God.
  • Sometimes the answer is "wait," or "you choose." That's an answer too.

The steps

Go at your own pace. Read each scripture in context if you can, and come back to any step as often as you need.

  1. Step 1: Bring a specific question

Decide what you're really asking. A clear question helps you recognize a clear answer.

    Scripture

    • “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God”
      James 1:5

    Reflect

What exactly am I asking God about?

    Try this

Write your question in one sentence.

    Write your response

Write your question in one sentence.

  2. Step 2: Study it out in your mind

Do your part. Gather information, think through options, and consider what you value. Then bring a possible decision to God.

    Scripture

    • Doctrine and Covenants 9:7–8
    • “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
      Proverbs 3:5–6

    Reflect

What do I already know about this choice? What are my options?

    Try this

List your options and what you see for and against each.

    Write your response

List your options and what you see for and against each.

  3. Step 3: Ask in prayer, and be still

Pray about your question and your possible decision. Then stay quiet and listen. Answers are often gentle.

    Scripture

    • “after the fire a still small voice.”
      1 Kings 19:11–12
    • “Be still, and know that I am God”
      Psalm 46:10

    Reflect

How can I make more quiet space in my life to listen?

    Try this

After praying about your question, sit in silence for five minutes.

    Write your response

After praying about your question, sit in silence for five minutes.

  4. Step 4: Learn how the Spirit speaks to you

The Spirit may come as peace, a clear thought, warmth, or a quiet sense of rightness. Look at how you've felt guided before.

    Scripture

    • “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith”
      Galatians 5:22–23
    • John 14:26
    • Doctrine and Covenants 8:2

    Reflect

When have I felt the Spirit before? What did it feel like?

    Try this

Write down a past experience when you felt guided, and how you knew.

    Write your response

Write down a past experience when you felt guided, and how you knew.

  5. Step 5: Check it against scripture and goodness

True guidance agrees with the teachings of Jesus Christ and leads to good. If an impression would hurt someone or go against those teachings, it isn't from God.

    Scripture

    • “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God”
      1 John 4:1
    • Moroni 7:16

    Reflect

Does this impression lead me toward love, honesty, and kindness?

    Try this

Compare your impression with a scripture on the same topic.

    Write your response

Compare your impression with a scripture on the same topic.

  6. Step 6: Act in faith

Often understanding comes as we move forward. Take a step in the direction that seems right, and keep praying.

    Scripture

    • “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine”
      John 7:17

    Reflect

What small step could I take in faith this week?

    Try this

Take one step toward the choice you feel good about, and notice how it feels.

    Write your response

Take one step toward the choice you feel good about, and notice how it feels.

  7. Step 7: Be patient

Some answers come quickly; many come slowly, or in pieces. Keep living faithfully while you wait.

    Scripture

    • “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength”
      Isaiah 40:31
    • Ether 12:6

    Reflect

How can I keep trusting God while I wait?

    Try this

Keep a short record of your question and any impressions, and look back at it in a month.

    Write your response

Keep a short record of your question and any impressions, and look back at it in a month.
